Yamaha's V4 MotoGP Engine: Power Struggles and a Rocky Start
Yamaha's new V4 MotoGP engine is facing a power crisis, and the team is determined to address it.
Yamaha's debut with its V4 MotoGP engine at the Sepang pre-season test was a challenging one. The brand, based in Iwata, Japan, found itself at the bottom of the leaderboard among MotoGP's top manufacturers, with a significant gap in performance. This setback was further compounded by an injury to their star rider, Fabio Quartararo, who had to withdraw from the test due to a broken finger.
But here's where it gets controversial: Yamaha's decision to sit out an entire day of testing due to safety concerns. This move, while prudent, highlights the team's struggle with engine issues, affecting not only Quartararo but also Pramac's rookie rider, Toprak Razgatlioglu.
Despite these challenges, Yamaha's sporting manager, Maio Meregalli, remains optimistic. He emphasizes that the bike's performance is satisfactory, but the engine is the weak spot. Meregalli states, "The area that needs the most improvement is power. The bike is rideable, and the balance is good. It's not performing badly overall."
Pramac's team manager, Gino Borsoi, agrees, adding that the chassis is competitive and works well. However, he acknowledges the lack of top speed, which Yamaha is already addressing.
And this is the part most people miss: Yamaha's V4 prototype made several wildcard appearances last year, but test rider Augusto Fernandez couldn't showcase its full potential due to the engine's 'safe mode'. Even at Sepang, Yamaha riders faced limitations, with a shortage of spare parts and replacement engines restricting their testing.
Meregalli explains, "Everything is new, and we don't have many parts. We knew we had to manage these two tests, Sepang and Buriram, with the same material. So, we had a specific mileage plan for each test."
Despite these constraints, Yamaha completed most of its Sepang test program, thanks to the additional mileage gained during the previous week's shakedown test as a Group D manufacturer.
Now, Yamaha is working on an updated engine specification to boost straight-line performance. However, the timeline for its introduction remains unclear.
Meregalli concludes, "It was a productive test. We evaluated most of the planned parts, focusing on the chassis, swingarm, and aerodynamics. Fine-tuning the settings will have to wait until the Buriram test."
