ROS are the culprits behind UV-induced skin damage and premature aging. Even more intriguing, NCG's effectiveness was comparable to a well-known antioxidant, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), suggesting its potency.
But the benefits didn't stop there. NCG also showed potential in combating wrinkles by restoring procollagen production and reducing collagen-degrading enzymes in fibroblasts. And when it comes to brightening, NCG outshone arbutin, a popular ingredient, by reducing melanin and tyrosinase activity. It achieved this by regulating key proteins involved in pigment production.
Tackling Inflammaging:
The concept of 'inflammaging' - chronic, low-level inflammation causing tissue damage and aging - is gaining traction. NCG's ability to reduce nitric oxide (NO) and key inflammatory proteins in immune cells (macrophages) suggests it could target the root cause of inflammaging. By calming this background inflammation, NCG might slow down collagen loss and improve skin tone.
The Road Ahead:
While NCG's potential is exciting, the researchers caution that real-world testing is essential. They acknowledge the need to study NCG's absorption into human skin and its effects on wrinkles, pigmentation, and inflammation in human volunteers.
