Luke Altmyer's NFL Draft Journey: How Lane Kiffin & Bret Bielema Shaped His Success (2026)

Luke Altmyer's NFL Draft Journey: How Two Contrasting Coaches Shaped His Path!

As Luke Altmyer wraps up his exciting college football career, he's now diving headfirst into the crucial pre-NFL Draft preparations. This journey kicked off with a standout performance at the Senior Bowl, and his sights are now firmly set on the prestigious NFL Scouting Combine. Altmyer, who spent five years playing college ball with the dream of gracing Indianapolis for the Combine, has had the unique experience of playing under two coaches with remarkably different coaching philosophies: Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss and Bret Bielema at Illinois.

But here's where it gets truly fascinating: by learning from both an offensive guru like Kiffin and a defensive strategist like Bielema, Altmyer has gained an invaluable, well-rounded perspective on the game. He's hoping these diverse lessons will serve him exceptionally well as he gears up for the next chapter in his football career.

Altmyer recently shared with On3, "I remember as a kid, going into college, I wrote down in a notebook some goals that I’ve always dreamed about achieving. The Combine was, really, one of the four of them. Just being there and competing in the Combine, knowing I did some good things in college. To be able to live that out, I don’t take it for granted. Super stoked to do it. I’m going to make the most of it. I’m preparing very hard for it."

He continued, "The coaches that I’ve played for prepared me for it, as well. Playing for such an offensive mind in Coach Kiffin and the way he’s able to think out of the box, and playing for a more old-school guy and defensive-minded coach in Coach Bielema, who really changed the course of my career and believed in me and taught me so many things."

And this is the part most people miss: Altmyer had a phenomenal 2025 season under Coach Bielema, helping the Illinois Illini achieve a remarkable two consecutive nine-win seasons – a historic first for the program! He showcased his talent by completing 67.4% of his passes for 3,007 yards and 22 touchdowns. This stellar performance came after he had the option to explore other opportunities following his decision not to enter the NFL Draft. However, by choosing to stay in Champaign-Urbana, he not only had a breakout year but also set himself up perfectly for the professional level.

Reflecting on his collegiate journey, which took him from Starkville to Oxford and finally to Champaign, Altmyer expressed no regrets. "Grateful for my journey," he stated. "It set me up in the most beneficial way possible for the next chapter of my life. That’s the truth."

What do you think about the impact of different coaching styles on a player's development? Do you believe playing under both offensive and defensive-minded coaches provides a significant advantage for aspiring NFL players? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
