LIVE: Major Roadworks Update - A172 and A174 Junction, Middlesbrough (2026)

Traffic chaos looms as major roadworks hit a busy junction in Middlesbrough! Motorists, brace yourselves for a bumpy ride.

The A172 Marton Road/A174 Interchange is the epicenter of this transportation upheaval, with a comprehensive repair and enhancement project kicking off. But here's the catch: these works are expected to cause significant disruptions for drivers, potentially lasting several months.

As of March 3rd, traffic maps reveal lengthy tailbacks near the junction, especially on Dixons Bank and the eastbound A174. The reason? A myriad of construction tasks, including concrete repairs under the bridge, waterproofing replacement, new kerbs and footways, resurfacing, and the addition of pedestrian fencing and vehicle safety barriers.

And this is where it gets interesting: to accommodate these works, a temporary contraflow system will be implemented on the A172, which might just be the cause of some heated debates among commuters.

Controversial Traffic Management:

The contraflow system will reduce traffic capacity on the bridge, with single lanes in each direction. But the real controversy arises when considering the temporary traffic lights and occasional full road closures. Will this cause more harm than good? Are there alternative solutions that could minimize disruption?

Navigating the Changes:

Motorists, take note! When traveling east or west on the A174 and accessing Marton Road, you'll need to make a left turn onto Stokesley Road, as right turns are prohibited. And for those crossing the bridge, right turns onto the A174 are also off the table.

Despite the challenges, Middlesbrough Council and Esh Construction have collaborated to keep the bridge open during the works, avoiding lengthy diversions. Advanced warning signs will be placed ahead of any full closures.

So, what's your take on this traffic conundrum? Are these disruptions a necessary evil for long-term improvements, or could there be a better way to manage the situation? Share your thoughts below!
