Lando Norris Dominates F1 Testing Day 1 in Bahrain! | McLaren's Blistering Start (2026)

The Formula 1 preseason testing in Bahrain has kicked off with a bang, and it's already shaping up to be an exciting season! Lando Norris, the newly crowned world champion, dominated day 1, setting the fastest time and keeping McLaren at the top of the leaderboard.

Norris, with his number one car, showed why he's a champion, outpacing Max Verstappen by a slim margin. But here's where it gets interesting: Verstappen, who relentlessly pursued McLaren's drivers in the previous season's title race, managed to complete an impressive 131 laps, indicating Red Bull's new engine project might just be a force to be reckoned with.

Charles Leclerc of Ferrari finished third, but over a second behind Norris. Headline times at this early stage of testing may not tell the whole story, but it's intriguing that the heavily favored Mercedes team didn't make a stronger showing.

Mercedes, which impressed with its mileage in Barcelona's private Shakedown event last month, had a more subdued day. Preseason favorite George Russell and Kimi Antonelli combined for 75 laps, but their times didn't quite live up to expectations.

McLaren's Zak Brown believes the top teams are too close to call. "I think it's too early to draw any firm conclusions," Brown said. "The big four are definitely the ones to watch, but it's hard to predict their order.

Mercedes was strong in Spain, and Max has shown great pace here. It seems the grid is still very much up for grabs."

Lewis Hamilton, driving for Ferrari in the morning, and Leclerc combined for a solid 126 laps. The day also gave us our first proper look at the Williams car, which missed the Shakedown test, and the highly anticipated Aston Martin designed by Adrian Newey.

Williams had a productive day, logging an impressive 144 laps with Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, a huge morale boost after a challenging start to the season. Aston Martin, on the other hand, completed only 36 laps with Lance Stroll, but team boss Newey remains optimistic, suggesting fresh upgrades are already in the works.

And this is the part most people miss: the new teams! Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez completed 104 laps, while Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriele Bortoleto of Sauber managed 118 laps.
